The lack of single patient rooms in many hospitals is an infection control risk but building rooms of bricks and mortar is sometimes impossible. A new side room could mean losing existing bed spaces and/or having to close part of the hospital for weeks during the construction works. The cost of such a project can also be considerable. Other solutions need to be considered to enable better segregation of patients.
