Bioquell Defence is a division of Bioquell UK Ltd. and is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of contamination control equipment.  Bioquell Defence has over 40 years experience in the research, design, development, production and support of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical filtration systems and Crew Cooling Units for armoured fighting vehicles, ships and shelters within the defence industry.  Products include:

  • Vehicle CBRN systems

  • Support equipment including inertial separators, pressure relief valves and engine air filters

Job Specification:

A mechanical design engineer is required to support the Defence Sales Team to develop and market existing and new products and will be involved throughout the complete product range from design to sales, manufacturing and product support.

The successful candidate will be qualified to a good Degree standard, HNC or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, with an aptitude for thermodynamics and refrigeration.  Experience of design using CAD systems, preferably ProE, is essential. Work experience in a design environment would be highly desirable and some experience with Defence and/or Automotive equipment and automotive air conditioning would also be an advantage. 

The person must be capable of integrating into the Bioquell Defence team and Bioquell Engineering, and working to tight time scales in a varied environment. This is likely to include working away from home for short periods both in UK and overseas, and on occasions working beyond normal hours.

A flexible approach will be required as the successful candidate will undertake a wide range of duties as part of their role within the Defence team.

Main Tasks

  • Work in conjunction with other members of the Defence Sales and Bioquell Engineering teams to produce concepts, design schemes and studies for CBRN air filtration systems and air conditioning systems for use on fighting vehicles and military shelters.
  • Assist with costing of the schemes as prepared above.
  • Assist with preparation of quotations and proposals for selling these systems to the customer.
  • Preparation of detailed schemes suitable for preparation of final detail drawings, and checking of resultant detail drawings and bills of materials. Preparation of drawings for smaller projects.
  • Provide technical assistance to Bioquell Defence sales and marketing both in house and at meetings with customers.

Job Title: Software / Controls Engineer.

Department: Technical Department.

Reports to: Controls Manager.

Background:

Bioquell is a leading supplier of Bio-Decontamination equipment, based on hydrogen peroxide vapour. With the expansion of the business, there is now a requirement for a Controls Engineer.

Qualification & Experience:

  • HND, Degree or similar
  • Experience and knowledge of programming in VB and C is important and working with SQL databases would be advantageous
    Knowledge on PCB design and wiring is not essential but would be beneficial
  • Must be able to show ability to work within larger design teams of different disciplines as well as with clients which may be on their site.
  • Must be able to demonstrate they can be hands on and fault find on the products.
  • Experience of Siemens PLC (S200 series) software will be advantageous

Responsibilities:

  • Writing Code for PIC Chips and other microprocessors to operate pharmaceutical type equipment. Testing and documentation of the programs to rigorous industry standards
  • Writing PLC code for products and interfaces with Facility systems, testing and documentation of the code. Some of the testing and finalising of parameters may be on overseas sites.
  • Design of systems to store in databases for both in house testing results and in products with appropriate access security

Job Specification for a Test Technician

Role Summary/Purpose

The Test Technician is responsible for the defined factory qualification testing of a range of bio-decontamination equipment with moderate complexity. This role follows an individual work plan and meets day-to-day short term objectives. The successful candidate will have the ability to resolve issues through immediate action.

Essential Responsibilities

Perform and analyse testing of existing and new products for manufacturing as directed by the manufacturing team leaders.

Carry out various electrical and mechanical measurements using a mix of standard and dedicated test equipment.

Taking measurements, logging results and complying with written procedures and instructions

Highlight any build quality issues found.

Assist in the continuous improvement of testing processes through observation and recommendation.

Qualifications/Requirements

Previous experience in production testing of electro-mechanical products in a mid volume manufacturing environment.

Ability to test down to component level and carry out repairs on a day-to-day basis.

ONC/OND level qualification in electro-mechanical engineering or other relevant discipline.

Ability to read circuit diagrams.

Ability to use basic test equipment.

PC literate including MS office skills.

Strong problem solving skills.

Clear and concise written communication skills.

Good interpersonal skills.

Keen attention to detail.

Methodical working practices.

Desired Characteristics

Experience in testing of medical devices.

Experience of working within a lean manufacturing environment.

Role:                  Senior Production Engineer

Qualifications:  Degree level in Mechanical, Electrical or Manufacturing Engineering

Post graduate experience in business associated with build and test of electro-mechanical assemblies is preferable.

The candidate will be able to demonstrate awareness and site examples of success in selecting and implementing best practice ‘lean’ process within an assembly environment. The role will cover both continuous improvement of existing production process, development of new process and NPI activities. The candidate will require excellent interpersonal skills as they will be required to interact at all levels within the business.

The ability to develop production cell concepts including, layout, process flow, capacity models, tooling and fixtures is essential and must include CAD skills, preferably using ProENG or AutoCAD.

General IT skills using MS office products is required and the candidate would be expected to be able to create professional reports, capital expenditure justifications and process documentation based on robust data analysis. The company uses an ERP system and the candidate would be expected to be capable of developing and maintaining system BOMs and routings based on assembly drawings and time studies.

Material Compatibility

Bioquell's scientific research regularly conducts tests to ascertain the effect of hydrogen peroxide vapour (H2O2) on various commonly encountered materials which may be exposed to both dry and saturated H2O2 during a gassing cycle.

This helps to provide a robust indication as to the effects of H2O2 based on scientific evidence. The method of producing the hydrogen peroxide vapour throughout these tests is consistent and comparable across the entire range of Bioquell's hydrogen peroxide vapour decontamination equipment.

It is important to understand that the test cycles are intentionally designed to be generally more destructive than the actual gassing environment. They are intended to apply a severe exposure to the test material in order to ensure that, under normal gassing conditions, there no likelihood of damage.

Further, one-off gassing is far less likely to produce material compatibility problems as compared to repeated gassing on a daily basis.

Hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV) bio-decontamination solutions developed by Bioquell have been used across the globe to eradicate problematic bacteria, viruses and fungi, throughout a wide range of applications. Bioquell’s unique HPV technology is used to bio-decontaminate rooms, equipment and electronic devices safely and as efficiently as possible, without leaving problematic residues associated with other traditional decontaminants such as formaldehyde or chlorine-based products. Moreover, the process is 'residue-free', breaking down to water vapour and oxygen – hence representing an extremely “green” or environmentally friendly biocide. The efficacy of the process has been validated using Tyvek® pouched 6-log Geobacillus stearothermophilus (spore) biological indicators.

Filtration technology

CBRN filters are designed to filter known chemical and biological warfare agents.  The NATO standard No.1 composite filter, which combines UHE (Ultra High Efficiency) elements and charcoal beds in matching forms, is a highly efficient (99.997%) radial-flow unit consisting of the following two elements:

1. Charcoal filter - made from a high carbon content raw material. It is ‘activated’ with chemicals to open up the pores to produce a microscopic sponge-like material with a vast internal surface area.  This makes the surface more active and receptive to known chemical warfare agents through a process of adsorption and chemisorbtion.

2. HEPA filters - composed of a mat of randomly arranged fibres. The fibres are typically composed of fibreglass of diameters between 0.5 and 2.0 microns. Key factors affecting function are fibre diameter, filter thickness and face velocity. The air space between HEPA filter fibres is much greater than 0.3 microns. The common assumption, that a HEPA filter acts like a sieve where particles smaller than the largest opening can pass through, is incorrect.  HEPA filters are designed to target much smaller particles. These particles are trapped (by sticking to a fibre) through a combination of the following three mechanisms:

i. Interception, where particles following a line of flow in the air stream come within one radius of a fibre and adhere to it.
ii. Impaction, where larger particles are unable to avoid fibres by following the curving contours of the air stream and are forced to embed in one of them directly; this effect increases with diminishing fibre separation and higher airflow velocity.
iii. Diffusion, an enhancing mechanism is a result of the collision with gas molecules by the smallest particles, especially those below 0.1 µm in diameter. These are thereby impeded and delayed in their path through the filter; this behaviour is similar to Brownian motion and raises the probability that a particle will be stopped by either of the two mechanisms above; it becomes dominant at lower airflow velocities.

Cyclone filters are often used as a pre-filter to protect and prolong the life of CBRN filters. Inertial separators use cyclonic action to separate dust particles from the air stream. In a typical cyclone, the dust airstream enters at an angle and is spun rapidly. The centrifugal force created by the circular flow throws the dust particles toward the wall of the cyclone. After striking the wall, these particles fall into either a hopper located underneath or are removed by a secondary cyclone scavenge fan.  Cyclones can achieve efficiencies as high as 97% when tested using BS 1701 coarse dust. 

Aqueous oxygen peroxide

Bioquell  has been involved in the development of ozone based decontamination systems for over 10 years. Products have been developed for pharmaceutical, food and healthcare industries using ozone in either its gaseous or, when dissolved into water, its aqueous form.  

Aqueous oxygen peroxide, more commonly known as ozone, is a molecule comprising three atoms of oxygen. This triatomic arrangement is unstable, making ozone molecules highly reactive. Ozone is an oxidising agent - one of the most powerful known to man.

As ozone oxidises other compounds, it loses an oxygen atom and forms oxygen. This powerful oxidation effect, coupled with the formation of oxygen as the bi-product of the reaction, makes ozone an excellent biocide. Ozone is generated at point of use, eliminating the need to transport and store potentially hazardous chemicals.

Its natural decomposition to oxygen makes it environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Our heritage

Bioquell is now the leading global supplier of bio-decontamination systems, led by advances developed in hydrogen peroxide vapour technology (HPV) over the last decade.

Built on a heritage of 'decontamination' technology, the original organisation was formed over 250 years ago, supplying plumbing and sanitation services to the public and private sector. This led to developments in flushing toilets/cisterns (including many installed at Royal residences and leading hospitals). As time progressed, work began to focus on developing advanced filtration products, leading to a range of fume cupboards and more recently laminar flow microbiological safety cabinets under the Astec and Microflow brand names. This filtration technology has also been employed in the defence sector providing chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear (CBRN) protection for armoured vehicles, ships and aircraft.

Today, alongside the advanced CBRN protection, HPV bio-decontamination has been extensively developed. There is significant support to the efficacy of this unique Bioquell technology provided through numerous published peer-reviewed scientific papers. Bioquell is the clear market leader in the development  and application of HPV technology, leading to many opportunities for deployment in the life science, healthcare, defence and food sectors.

Efficacy

Bioquell’s hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV) is well established as a bio-decontamination agent due to its broad spectrum efficacy and its ability to inactivate rapidly the most resilient micro-organisms. The ‘residue-free’ nature of HPV (the only residues are oxygen and water) and low temperature, vapour phase application increases the utility of the process.

HPV has been tested against many organisms and classes of organisms. However, because a great number of ‘common’ microorganisms exist, efficacy testing remains an ongoing process.

HPV has been shown to kill a wide range of micro-organisms including bacteria, viruses and fungi. The efficacy of HPV has been repeatedly demonstrated against bacterial endospores, which are the most resistant organisms commonly found on environmental surfaces, so are positioned at the top of the Spaulding classification.

The organisms listed in the HPV biological efficacy review document are divided into broad taxonomic categories (i.e. bacteria, viruses and fungi) and grouped according to their microbiological characteristics. This division allows for an easy comparison of an untested organism with other related organisms that have been tested. The appendix in this document includes the abstracts for the published journal articles.

Microbiology

Bioquell hydrogen peroxide vapour technology is effective against a wide range of microbes, including bacteria, mould, fungi and viruses. This section provides a scientific profile and background data on many of the common types of microbes that exist.

Hydrogen Peroxide Vapour

Bio-decontamination within a room or chamber is achieved by depositing an even layer of 'micro-condensation' of hydrogen peroxide vapour (HPV) over all surfaces. The term micro-condensation may be defined as a microscopic film of HPV, which being at a sub-micron level is invisible to the naked eye.

Scientific research has proven that it is this low temperature, 'residue-free' deposit that actually deactivates micro-organisms during the gassing process.

The micro-condensation process ensures that the optimum conditions for biological inactivation are achieved. When the process reaches the dew point the time required for a log reduction of activity (the D-Value) is shortest. This occurs when the kill kinetic curve plotted against time is steepest. The transition between the shallow curve and the steep section coincides with the onset of micro-condensation.

The combination of a vapour generator and high velocity gas distribution nozzles and fans provides an even spread of HPV vapour which can be introduced in the optimum combinations to all areas of a room or enclosure.

Utilising this system of active distribution, all surfaces are uniformly exposed to hydrogen peroxide vapour. This system is operated at ambient room temperature and relative humidity, without the need to attain significantly reduced humidity traditionally associated with hydrogen peroxide bio-decontamination systems.

Hydrogen peroxide vapour decomposes to oxygen and water vapour, hence the bio-decontamination process is 'residue-free'. The main benefit of this is that no further wiping down of surfaces is required on completion of decontamination.

Hydrogen peroxide vapour concentration is reduced to below a 1ppm concentration level, which is the current time-weighted average safe exposure limit, before re-entry to the room is permitted of hydrogen peroxide, via the vaporiser circuit.
